What to record

For every lesson, record the date, the student, the subject or batch and whether the student was present, absent or late. Add a short note for absences, such as illness or exams, and mark if a make-up lesson is needed.

A simple register layout

Rows are students and columns are dates in the month. Mark P for present, A for absent and L for late, then count the totals at the end of the month.

  • Student name and class
  • Columns for each lesson date
  • P, A or L in each cell
  • Monthly total: lessons held, lessons attended, attendance %
  • A remarks column for make-up lessons and notes

Tips for accurate attendance

Mark attendance as soon as the lesson ends, while you remember. Keep one register per student or batch. If you bill per lesson, check attendance before you issue the monthly invoice.

From paper to your phone

A paper register works until you have more than a handful of students. Cometstep lets you mark present, absent or late in one tap, keeps the monthly history for every student and can tell parents the same day if a lesson was missed. It is free for up to 25 students.
